There is evidence that body painting has existed as long as there have been people. They were closely connected to the rhythm of people's lives, were an expression of their joy, their lust for life, but also of their fears and sadness. And body painting was almost always practised in connection with music and dance, as can still be observed today among some primitive peoples. Body painting, body decoration, masks and costumes make it easier for people to slip into other roles, to portray and express themselves in ways that would not be possible in everyday life. The movements in dance, whether soft and flowing or rhythmically ecstatic, combined with appropriate music, make it easier for the dancer to change roles. The dance releases inner tensions, frees from fears and inhibitions, reinforces the liberating effect of body painting. A body painted from head to toe needs neither costume nor mask.
While body painting in primitive peoples served rather cultic purposes, e.g. to drive away evil spirits, to deter enemies through war painting or during initiation rituals, in today's society the focus of bdypainting is rather on recreational fun or artistic activity.
Body painting still has a significant social aspect today: body painting only works in a group. To paint each other, you have to be at least two people. This requires a very sensitive approach to closeness and shared nakedness. But above all, it is fun to unfold one's own creativity, to use the unlimited possibilities to design the naked skin with paint, brush and sponge. And depending on your talent, considerable works of art can be created in the process. Unfortunately, they are very short-lived and end in the bathtub at the latest. Fortunately, there are cameras to at least capture the result of body painting in a picture.
